Meeting Description:

Language contact is an indispensable prerequisite for the development of contact languages. The place where language contact begins is in the mind of the individual. Such language contact may result in a change of the linguistic behavior of an entire speech community – a contact language arises.

The colloquium explores language contact and contact languages with this broad perspective in mind. The contributions to the colloquium cover the simultaneous and successive acquisition of multiple languages, the analysis of new and unexplored social situations involving several languages, language contact in specific institutional settings, contact in specific modes of communication or between specific linguistic subsystems, the consequences of language contact for language change (contact-induced change) as well as the relevance of language-internal variation.

The investigation of language contact and contact languages is at its best when it comes to discovering patterns of and limits to language contact phenomena. The colloquium places special emphasis on the description, elaboration and explanation of such universal constraints on language contact. Both functionally oriented analyses of contact phenomena and contact universals as well as those given within Universal Grammar will be discussed.
