El 'Coloquio Francisco Belmar: Las lenguas Otomangues y Oaxaqueñas ante el Siglo
XXI', que se celebrará en la ciudad de Oaxaca el 21, 22 y 23 de abril de 2006,
reunirá a diversas personas interesadas en las lenguas otomangues y oaxaqueñas:
Poetas y escritores, maestros y lingüistas, hablantes y principiantes de estas
lenguas compartiremos sus conocimientos y reflexionaremos desde diversos puntos
de vistas sobre la trayectoria histórica de las lenguas otomangues y oaxaqueñas
y su futuro.
El propósito del ''Coloquio Francisco Belmar: Las lenguas Otomangues y
Oaxaqueñas ante el Siglo XXI'' es reunir a todas las personas interesadas en las
lenguas otomangues y oaxaqueñas, sean escritores, maestros, músicos y lingüistas
de estas lenguas originarias, para que juntos reflexionemos sobre la situación y
el estado de estas lenguas, sus trayectorias históricas, los avances de su
estudio, los mecanismos sociales que operan en pro o en contra de su
conservación y desarrollo y la formulación de estrategias para detener la
pérdida que algunas ellas están sufriendo. El papel de la descripción
lingüística, la lengua escrita y la escuela en el porvenir de las lenguas
otomangues y oaxaqueñas serán algunos de los temas que el coloquio pondrá bajo
examen.
Dedicamos en evento a la memoria del Lic. Francisco Belmar (1859-1926),
originario de Tlaxiaco y uno de los pioneros de la lingüística mexicana. Don
Francisco llevó a cabo investigaciones lingüísticas sobre varias de las lenguas
otomangues, entre ellos el mazateco, trique, cuicateco, amuzgo, chocholteco,
mixteco, popoloca, y más particularmente el zapoteco, pero también sobre lenguas
oaxaqueñas no-otomangues, como el chontal, huave, nahuatl y mixe. Algunas de sus
publicaciones constituyen los primeros estudios de estas lenguas. Aparte de
esto, Don Francisco combinó este interés intelectual con una preocupación por la
situación social y el futuro de sus hablantes y con un deseo para una
dignificación de las lenguas originarias de México.
Este coloquio es la continuación y ampliación de la Conference on Otomanguean
and Oaxacan Languages (COOL) celebrado en Berkeley en marzo de 2004.
Si quisiera participar como ponente, la fecha límite para la recepción de
resúmenes es el 31 de enero de 2006.

Symposium : Mathematics and phonology--Mathematical modelization tools in
phonology (MathPhon I)
Orléans - August, 31st / September 1st
The Mathematics and Phonology symposium is an unprecedented event in the field
on a global scale. Mathematicians specialising in statistics, modelization,
PDEs, or signal processing, and phonologists originating from a whole range of
backgrounds--Generative phonology and CVCV, Optimality theory, Laboratory
phonology, cognitive phonology, acquisitionism, will address their methods and
results on the same issue--phonology, in an effort to put to the test the
validity and the scope of mathematical modelizations. A similar collaboration is
already at work within the context of the ACI, Complex SHS Systems which has
been named: ''towards a dynamic model of the emerging of symbolic
representations in speech processing.''

ought to be opened to a collaboration between two fields which can be both
listed under formalisation in different ways, in order to assess the diverging
and converging of their theories.
The topic of the symposium is voluntarily opened to all schools of thought and
all the different areas of the field. Phonology, and more widely
language-science-related phenomena have hardly ever been touched upon by the
mathematical community apart from statistic and logic based analyses, a dialogue
with physics, signal processing (acoustic and phonetic) and the modelisation of
the vocal apparatus (ondulatory mechanics, resonance). The practicality of the
different formalisms, the diversity of notations and the spectacular increase of
data makes room and a need for new tools. The stress will be put on modelisation.
The symposium is organised by both the CORAL (centre Orléannais de Recherche en
Anthropologie et linguuistique dirigé par Gabriel Bergounioux) and the MAPMO
(Mathématiques et applications Physique Mathématique d'Orléans which counts
amongst its members Ms Bergounioux, a mathematician) at the university of
Orleans on the 31st of August and the 1st of September 2006. A one-hour plenary
conferences a 45-min communication session, a poster session and a ''maths for
phonology'' tutorial are scheduled.
