We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate. In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have taken the trouble to respond to the query. To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.html.

Hello all As part of a project for a graduate course in Phonology at San José State University, I'm trying to reproduce the experiment documented in Malécot (1960) on vowel nasality in American English. In the interest of getting many participants from different regions of English-speaking North America, I have created a web based version of three sessions of the experiment. If you have the time (about 10-15 minutes) and would like to participate, you can access the experiment at the following URL: http://brianpardini.home.comcast.net/ Thank you so much for your time and interest! Subject: Finnish Etymology
Dear Linguist list members, I have been trying to get more information on the etymology of Finnish 'kadehtia'(envy) and 'antaa anteeksi' (forgive) but my efforts have been fruitless so far. I know of at least one good etymological dictionary for Finnish (Suomen sanojen alkuperä — The Origin of Finnish Words first volume, A—K 1992; second volume, L—P 1995; third volume, R—Ö 2000), but I have not found a copy at the Scandinavian department of our university. In addition, I myself do not master the Finnish language so any information I'd come across in Finnish would also need to be translated to be of any use. That is also why I use the LINGUIST List as a final resort, hoping that one of you can help me out. If anyone can fill me in on the etymology of these words or provide access to such kind of information, I'd be really grateful. I need the etymological information for a cross-linguistic comparison on verbs of forgiving and envying in different languages. Thanks a lot in advance!
