Institution/Organization: Radboud University Nijmegen Department: Linguistics Level: PhD Duties: Research Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Phonology Required Language(s): Dutch (nld) Description: The Faculty of Arts of the Radboud University Nijmegen is seeking to fill a PhD position in phonetic and phonogical structure The PhD project Intonation in L2 Dutch aims to investigate the phonetic and phonogical structure of the intonation and lexical tones (if any) of one non-Germanic minority language spoken in the Netherlands (e.g. Berber, Cantonese, Kurdish, Moluccan, Papiamentu, Saramaccan, Sranang, Turkish, Vietnamese, etc.), in order to establish the differences and similarities between the prosodic characteristics of this language and those of standard Dutch as spoken by the same group of speakers. The choice of language will depend on the successful candidate's preference, who may be a native speaker of the minority language in question. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with an MA in Linguistics or an equivalent degree with a specialization in Linguistics, preferably with an emphasis on phonetics and phonology. Organization The Faculty of Arts consists of eleven departments in the area of language and culture, history, history of arts, linguistics and business communication, which together cater to about 2,500 students and work closely together in teaching and research. Other information: The position is part of the NWO-funded research programme Intonation in Varieties of Dutch, which also includes a three-year post-doc position and another PhD position.
