C/653/09] The Department of English and Communication under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is fairly large and diverse, with a full range of teaching and research programmes in the areas of English Language and Media Communication. In English Language, the Department offers BA (Hons) in English for the Professions, BA (Hons) in Teaching English as a Second Language, MA in English for Specific Purposes, and MA in Teaching English as a Second Language. In communication studies, the Department offers BA (Hons) in English for Professional Communication, BA (Hons) in Integrated Strategic Communication, and MA in Communication and New Media. The Department also offers a wide range of English for Academic Purpose courses to students across the university to develop their English communication skills. The Department has a very active research agenda with a twin focus on applications of linguistics and language technology and media communication research. In applications of linguistics, the Department has expertise to supervise research in several areas of applied linguistics, such as corpus linguistics, language and law, language acquisition, and the applied genre and critical discourse analysis of academic, professional, institutional and public discourses. In the field of communication, the Department conducts research in the structures, processes, and effects of various modes of media communication in relation to their larger political, economic, and cultural implications. Broad areas of research include: media, political economy, and globalization; use and diffusion of new media; inter-Asian cultural studies; organizational and corporate communication. The Department offers research programmes leading to MPhil and PhD in all these areas. In terms of area expertise, the appointee will have to fit comfortably into at least one of the above-mentioned specialties. The Head of Department will be expected to provide strong academic leadership in the development of teaching and research in the Department. Candidates should possess strong academic and professional qualifications, substantial relevant experience in tertiary education and a successful record of research and scholarship. Candidates should possess appropriate academic and professional qualifications in a relevant area, an outstanding record of scholarly research and publications, teaching and administrative experience in a university setting. Appointment will be at an academic rank commensurate with qualifications and experience on superannuable terms with provision for superannuation benefits, or on a fixed-term contract with contract-end gratuity. Concurrently, the appointee will be offered the headship appointment for a period of three years initially.
