Editor for this issue: Ann Sawyer <sawyerlinguistlist.org>

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international employment page at http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Asian Studies

The Nagoya University of Commerce and Business (NUCB) is currently seeking
to recruit for its Faculty of Foreign Languages and Asian Studies a dynamic
and enthusiastic individual as Dean.

The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Asian Studies is one of four faculties
at NUCB. It consists of the Department of English Communication and the
Department of Asian Studies. It draws a teaching staff of 40 from over 18
nationalities.

NUCB consistently receives a high academic ranking and is strongly
committed to global standards for excellence in scholarship and research.
In April 2006, it became only the second institution in Japan to be
accredited by the prestigious Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business (AACSB) and the first Japanese institution to be a member of the
European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).

The Dean's duties will include the oversight of the faculty as an academic
community, will act as liaison with other faculties within the university,
maintain oversight of teaching and learning in both the undergraduate and
graduate campuses, be responsible for standards of student performance in
examinations external to the university, assist with links to university
partners, assist in the promotion of the university to potential students
and the wider community.

Requirements for the preferred applicant should include:

- Ph.D. in the language related field taught in the Faculty from a highly
reputable institution.
- Have some experience in administration management at University level
- Some experience in the Japanese tertiary environment would be helpful but
is not compulsory
- Have a keen and proven interest in research

It is anticipated that the new Dean will take office sometime between Sept
1st 2006 and March 2007.

Please send formal applications including CV, a letter of interest and the
