The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page at http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been
set up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Subject: Korean; Thai & General Linguistics: Consultant, Butler Hill Group, CT, USA
University or Organization: Butler Hill Group Specialty Areas: General Linguistics Required Language(s): Korean (kor) Thai (tha) Description: Freelance work for linguists Posted June 26, 2006 The Butler Hill Group, a virtual computational linguistics consulting company, seeks linguists for Korean and Thai to perform a number of tasks related to a natural language processing system under development. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: evaluating machine translation output and reporting major linguistic errors in the target language to the developer team, consulting with linguists and developers during the development process, and then performing quality assurance (testing) of system output. Sample background tasks might include verifying customer feedback, manually creating syntactically annotated datasets, and inspecting parallel training data. Qualified candidates must be native speakers of Korean or Thai and must demonstrate excellent communication skills in English. They should also have an academic or professional background in linguistics, especially syntax, strong computer skills in a Windows environment, and have detail-oriented personalities. The ideal candidate would be interested in becoming an integral member of a virtual team of linguists working remotely from his or her current location. The work hours will be variable, in the range of 2-15 hours / week, although we are usually able to anticipate which weeks will be busier than others. This is an ongoing project, so we are looking for individuals who are seeking a longer-term commitment for part-time work. Some travel may be required. This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate student or junior faculty seeking supplementary income as we are willing to accommodate many unusual scheduling and telecommuting requirements. Our client is based in the Seattle area, (Pacific Standard Time zone), so although there is no geographic requirement regarding remote work location, all linguistic consultants will be expected to be timely in their communication and regularly available for some email or phone correspondence during the client's regular business hours (9h00-17h00 PST). US residents must have any-employer US work authorization valid for the next 12 months. Unfortunately, the Butler Hill Group cannot sponsor employment visas. This position requires a high-speed Internet connection (DSL or cable). Furthermore, we ask that you have regular, secure access to a personal computer (i.e., not a public computer), run a recent version of Windows (e.g., XP) and have proficiency using Microsoft Office. We offer a competitive, professional hourly rate, paid as 1099 self-employment income. The start date for this position will be no earlier than July 5th, 2006. To apply, please email a recent resume or CV, in English, along with a cover letter (in the body of your email) verifying or specifying the following information, to cah butlerhill.com: - US work authorization - Availability (hours per week & vacation schedule, if known) from July 5th, 2006 through 2007 - all languages spoken and reading proficiency level / fluency in each language - current version of Windows and currently installed MS Office applications (please specify proficiency level in each application) **Please include the language you are applying for in the subject line of your email. You may address your cover letter to Courtenay Hendricks. Application Deadline: (Open until filled) Contact Information: Courtenay Hendricks Email: cah butlerhill.com
