Food and language? Food and language! We are of course not only talking about eating but also about drinking, and eating and drinking embedded in a culture as well as a discourse.

The topic is actually calling for an interdisciplinary approach (sociology, semiotics, literary and cultural studies, nutrition, medicine, economics …) but in this workshop we would like to make linguistics the central concern.

Food and language are so much naturally connected and related that it is surprising to see how little research has been done in this area. We can only give a non-exhaustive list of possible aspects here and are hoping for a wide range of reactions:

Onomastics
- Names of dishes, of products
- Names of restaurants

Conversation analysis
- Conversations while eating, while cooking
- Conversations about food

Text linguistics
- Menus
- Recipes, cookery books

Lexicology, semantics
- Food names (e.g. Austria vs. Germany)
- Quantities

Semiotics
- Packaging
- Advertising (multimedial)

Literature, stylistics
- Descriptions of nuances of taste
- Gastronomy reviews

Special languages
- The language of wine
- The language of cooking

Media studies
- The TV format ''TV cooks''
- Films such as 'Mondovino', 'We feed the world', 'Unser täglich Brot'

Critical discourse analysis
- Stereotypes about countries in advertising
- The country/place of origin ideology

Intercultural studies
- Cultural contact via the gastronomy
- One product, different ''frames'' (e.g. wine, speck, jam)

Contributions: 20 min. presentation, 10 min. discussion; registrations and abstract by 15 September 2006 to eva.lavricuibk.ac.at
