Erica Reiner, professor emerita of Assyriology at the Oriental Institute,
University of Chicago, died on December 31, 2005. Her most enduring monument is
the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary, of which she was Editor-in-Charge for more than
twenty years - she is the only scholar to have contributed to every one of its
volumes, the first one having been published in 1956, the last one expected to
appear in 2006.

Quite aside from her invaluable and extensive work on Akkadian literature and
Mesopotamian astronomy and astrology, she also wrote the first linguistically
(as opposed to philologically) oriented grammars of Akkadian (1966) and Elamite
(written 1960, published 1969).
