We are seeking a prominent scholar with a distinguished record of accomplishments to lead the Department in a period of significant opportunity. The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese is a vibrant department with nationally visible graduate programs in both Literature and Hispanic Linguistics, a rapidly expanding undergraduate major in Italian with options in Language and Literature as well as in Italian Cultural Studies, and a developing Portuguese minor. Our graduate programs have 49 graduate students pursuing research in both Peninsular and Latin American literature and in a range of areas in both theoretical and applied Hispanic Linguistics. We have strong cross-disciplinary connections, including close ties with Comparative Literature, Latina/o Studies, and Latin American Studies, as well as a highly integrated, cross-disciplinary graduate program in Hispanic Linguistics that connects with colleagues across the language departments, as well as in Psychology, Applied Linguistics, and Penn State's Center for Language Science. With our graduate programs, our extensive basic and advanced language offerings, and our contribution to Penn State's general education curriculum, the Department plays a central role in the teaching and research missions of the university. We invite applications from qualified candidates in any of our language areas and in all areas of specialization. Requirements include a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline and teaching and research achievements appropriate to appointment as a tenured Full Professor at our institution. In addition to her or his academic qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess administrative experience or evidence of strong administrative potential. The new Head will have the opportunity to hire several tenure-track or tenured faculty members, and we are seeking a candidate with the vision and energy to continue to advance all of our programs. We will begin reviewing applications on November 1, 2006, and will continue until the position is filled.
