The Department of English in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities invites applications for the academic position in the following area: General Linguistics & Translation Studies Qualifications The successful applicant must have a distinguished record of research and publication and will be required to develop and support the research profile of the Department. Applicant must possess a PhD in a related area at time of application or must be able to prove that PhD will be conferred before taking up any position offered. There are two vacancies for this position. The position is for a generalist with expertise in English linguistics and experience in translation teaching. An interest in the English language in an Asian context is also highly desirable. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate courses in general linguistics and research methodology, as well as MA and PhD thesis supervision. Candidates should have the background and qualifications to pursue an active programme of teaching and research in Legal Translation (including court interpretation)/English-Cantonese-English Interpretation/Business and Tourism Translation and Interpretation/Translation Studies/Translation for the Media/Literary Translation, and research in one or more of the following areas of expertise: discourse analysis, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics. Taxable Annual Salary The salary level shall be determined according to the appointee's academic qualifications, current position, and professional experience: Professor: MOP676,200 - MOP735,000 Associate Professor: MOP588,000 - MOP661,500 Assistant Professor: MOP477,750 - MOP551,250 (USD1 approx. = MOP8) Selected candidates are requested to assume duty in September 2007.
