Subject: Journal Acceptance Rates: Responses
Query for this summary posted in LINGUIST Issue:
17.3534
Regarding Query: http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-3534.html A short while ago, I posted a query asking about sources for information about journal acceptance rates. I received the following suggestions: 1. The MLA Directory of Periodicals (often bundled with the MLA International Bibliography) lists relevant information for most language and linguistics journals. (They list number of articles submitted and number published.) I followed this suggestion up and it works reasonably well. A word of caution, though: the numbers listed on the MLA site for articles submitted are quite rough. However, where I have precise information from publishers the MLA results are reasonably close. 2. I also received a suggestion for Cabell's directory (education version), but my institution doesn't hold that, so I couldn't follow it up. 3. In various cases, I contacted the editors or publishers. Responses were varied. In only once case did I receive quite precise statistics. 4. Some journals (at least occasionally) release the information in an annual editor's report (e.g. Language, IJAL). 5. ISI's Journal Citation Reports (many prominent language and linguistics journals are unfortunately excluded, since there is only a category for 'Applied Linguistics'). In general, I think it would be a good policy for journals to put this information up front in their information for authors section. Many thanks to the following people for suggestions and comments: Laura Callahan, Mary Jane Curry, Timothy Face, Ewa Jaworska, Douglas Lightfoot, Regina Morin, and Ingo Plag. Ash Asudeh
