Meeting Description:
The Independent Learning Association invites you to attend its third international conference to be held in Chiba, Japan, from October 5-8, 2007. The theme of the conference is Exploring Theory, Enhancing Practice: Autonomy across the Disciplines. The conference will be hosted by Kanda University of International Studies [KUIS] which is located within easy commuting distance of the heart of Tokyo, Narita International Airport, and Tokyo International (Haneda) Airport.
Independent Learning Association The Independent Learning Association, founded in New Zealand in 2001, is an organisation of dedicated language educators who are passionate about promoting learner autonomy and creating learning environments that facilitate independent language learning. The Association's past two conferences have provided an international forum where practitioners, researchers, and academics in the area of autonomy in language education could share their work and concerns. Conference Theme At this point in time, we believe our area of study could benefit from an exploration of how autonomy is conceived in other disciplines and how these conceptions inform theorising, research, and practice. Therefore, we invite theorists and researchers from other academic disciplines to join with language educators from Japan and beyond in an interdisciplinary exploration of learner autonomy. It is our hope that this occasion will provide an unprecedented opportunity for participants to expand their theoretical horizons and to reflect on practice. Conference Goals The conference has the following goals: 1) To expand the theoretical base of learner autonomy in language learning by engaging academics from around the world in an interdisciplinary discussion. 2) To review past achievements in the field, both theoretical and practical, and to set future directions. 3) To promote pedagogical innovation in classrooms that foster learner autonomy and in self-access centres. 4) To support and consolidate growing interest in self-access learning and learner autonomy in Japan. 5) To expand understanding of the relationship between CALL and learner autonomy. 6) To explore the role of teacher education programmes in preparing educators to work in learning environments that foster learner autonomy and independent learning. Call for Proposals The conference organisers invite proposals for papers and posters in the following areas: Autonomy across the disciplines Autonomy and the classroom Autonomy and innovation in self-access learning Autonomy and computer-assisted language learning Autonomy and assessment Autonomy and child language learning Autonomy and teacher education Autonomy and distance education Details for the preparation and submission of proposals can be found on the website (www.independentlearning.org).
