Intonation research has been the subject of increasing interest within the least
25 years. Recent studies have concentrated on questions of intonational
variation such as differences in intonational inventories between varieties or
dialects, or typologically diverging languages. Although these studies are based
on elaborate methodologies for the analysis of intonation, the possible
consequences on the results of the choice of data type are hardly ever touched
upon. Recent results, however, suggest a close connection between the type of
data (e.g. laboratory data, read speech, map-task, spontaneous dialogue) and the
modelling of intonation. Methods of data elicitation therefore cannot be
regarded as a simple matter of preference or ''taste'', but have to be
considered as having a direct impact on the reconstruction of tonal grammars.
Furthermore, the significance of quantitative distributions of specific
contours, as well as consequences of the domains analysed (e.g. isolated
sentences, question-answer-pairs, turns) must also be considered. Detailed
knowledge with respect to these aspects will further lead to an enhancement of
skills for the analysis of unknown languages.

Call for Papers
The workshop aims at bringing together researchers on intonation, interactional
linguistics, phonetics and phonology in order to discuss current methodological
issues and their impact on the modelling of intonation. Papers on all topics
related to the relevance of methodological aspects for modelling intonation are
welcome. In particular, we encourage contributions on:
- comparisons between different types of data in data elicitation
(questionnaire, read speech, laboratory data, map-task, interviews, spontaneous
dialogue, and combinations thereof)
- the consequences of analytical methods on intonational modelling (data
normalization, correlations of phonetic implementation with prosodic hierarchy,
mapping of phonetics and phonology)
- the representativeness of data samples (frequency of occurrence, distribution)
methods for language comparison (phonetic, phonological, semantic levels)
Presentations will be 20 minutes long followed by a 10-minute question period.
The language of the workshop will be English.
Submission of Abstracts
Abstracts should be in English and fit on one page (using 2.5 cm margins, 1.2
line spacing, and 12pt font size).

Atelier: La variation co(n)textuelle dans l'interlangue d'apprenants de français
langue étrangère
Dans le cadre du colloque RSL IV se tiendra un atelier axé sur 'la variation
co(n)textuelle dans l'interlangue d'apprenants de FLE'. L'objectif de cet
atelier consistera à examiner en quelle mesure et sur quels plans le phénomène
de la 'variation' caractérise le processus d'acquisition du FLE et se manifeste
dans les productions des apprenants.
Descriptif de l'atelier
L'objectif de l'atelier consistera à examiner en quelle mesure et sur quels
plans le phénomène de la ''variation'' caractérise le processus d'acquisition du
FLE et se manifeste dans les productions des apprenants. Plus concrètement, il
sera vérifié comment les facteurs contextuels d'une part et le co-texte d'autre
part influencent la construction du sens linguistique par les apprenants:
A un niveau contextuel: quel est l'impact (a) des traits liés à l'apprenant
(âge, attitude et motivation, aptitude, L1 etc.), (b) des conditions
d'apprentissage (acquisition naturelle vs. instructionnelle, type d'input, etc.)
et (c) des facteurs d'élicitation (tâche orale vs. écrite, interview guidée vs.
conversation spontanée, etc.) sur la compétence langagière (syntaxique,
sémantique, pragmatique, etc.) de l'apprenant?
Sur le plan co-textuel: dans quelle mesure les apprenants sont-ils sensibles (a)
au genre (argumentation, narration, etc.), (b) à l'organisation discursive et
(c) aux caractéristiques linguistiques du co-texte dans leurs choix
linguistiques (constructions, lexique, concordance des temps, marqueurs
discursifs et cohésifs, etc.)?
L'atelier s'intéresse aux facteurs (extra)linguistiques permettant d'expliquer
aussi bien (a) la variation dans l'IL d'un apprenant (''intra-interlangagier'')
que (b) la variation repérée entre les systèmes langagiers de différents
apprenants (''inter-langagier'').
Langue
Langue de la présentation: le français.
Langue étudiée: l'interlangue des apprenants de FLE, éventuellement comparée à
d'autres interlangues et/ou étudiée dans ses rapports avec la langue
source/cible des apprenants.
Appel à communications: procédure de soumission
Les propositions de communication (30 minutes + 10 minutes pour des questions)
doivent être envoyées à annemie.demolugent.be ou à nancy.kempsvub.ac.be, au
plus tard le 28 septembre 2007.
Veuillez respecter les consignes suivantes:
- Mettez dans le corps du message le nom, le prénom, l'affiliation, l'adresse
professionnelle, l'adresse de correspondance de l'auteur/des auteurs et le titre
de la communication.
- Ajoutez dans un fichier joint au format .rtf de Microsoft Word (dont le nom
répondra au schéma suivant: nomd'auteur.rtf) un résumé de 3000 signes maximum,
reprenant le titre de l'exposé, son cadre et ses limites, son objectif précis,
la méthode suivie, les (premiers) résultats obtenus/attendus et les principales
références bibliographiques. Ni le nom de l'auteur/des auteur(s) ni
l'établissement/le laboratoire auquel celui-ci/ceux-ci sont rattachés ne doivent
figurer dans le texte.
