The Society for Language Development's annual symposium (just before the Boston
University Conference on Language Development) focuses this year on
'Generalization in language learning'. Speakers are Janet Pierrehumbert, Josh
Tenenbaum, and Steven Pinker. The symposium takes place in Boston University's
George Sherman Student Union, Thurs. Nov. 1, 1:00-5:00.

Language acquisition requires generalizations that involve multiple
linguistic levels. The complexity of the interrelations among
structural levels in language presents a challenge to the learner --
even a learner endowed with prodigious capacities for statistical
computation. Given this challenge, how might a data-driven learner
succeed? The 2007 SLD symposium presents three speakers who will
address this issue, plus discussion and afterward an informal
