The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page at http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been
set up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:
Position number: 200704131 Reference: 07-4131 At the University of Tromsø there is a vacant position as programmer/computational linguist for Sámi language technology. The position is associated with the Department of Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Tromsø. Starting in 2008, the University of Tromsø will establish a Centre for Sámi language technology. The Centre is based upon research conducted at the University. So far, the work has been centred around making programs for morphological and syntactic analysis of Northern and Lule Sámi and (as joint work with the Sámi Parliament) to make spell checkers for the same languages. Concrete plans for the foreseeable future include integrating the programs with interactive pedagogical applications, and with dictionaries, and working on machine translation between Sámi and other languages. Long-term plans include information retrieval, data mining, grammar checkers and audio applications. We also see Sámi language technology as a foundation for work on Sámi linguistics in general, and work hard to make machine-tagged corpora in different formats available for research. Our work on Sámi is also seminal in making solutions for other languages with similar typological features. The Centre will contain 3 permanent positions. The programmer/computational linguist will work on planning, architecture, design and implementation of infrastructure for Sámi language technology. The successful applicant is a person with higher education within informatics, computational or general linguistics. Background in programming and experience with software development is a prerequisite, experience with programming finite-state automata is a plus. Experience with Unix/Linux, regular expressions, Perl, XML and related technologies, GNU make, CVS/Subversion is a prerequisite. Knowledge of languages such as C, C++ and Java are an advantage, but not a prerequisite. Knowledge of formal grammar (of human languages) is a plus. The successful applicant should have experience with work within language technology. Knowledge of or experience with Sámi or typologically similar languages is a plus, but not a prerequisite. More information on the Sámi language technology at the University of Tromsø can be found at the home page of the project, http://giellatekno.uit.no, or by contacting Trond Trosterud. The remuneration for this position is in accordance with the State wage scale code 1087 or 1181, depending on qualifications. A compulsory contribution of 2% is made to the Norwegian State Pension Fund. The application must be submitted electronically on the application form available at www.jobbnord.no.
