We welcome abstracts for papers exploring any aspects of the way in which Spanish is used in society. Of particular interest are theoretical, methodological and empirical papers on the use of Spanish in institutional contexts of communication. For example: - Spanish in business communication, including call centres and service encounters - Spanish in health-care and judicial contexts - Spanish in educational settings - Spanish in the mass media - Spanish in political communication Our theme, Spanish at Work, is not limited to how Spanish is used in its own right but includes also how it 'works alongside' other languages in the above contexts. Proposals for papers around issues relating to bilingualism / multilingualism and inter- / cross- cultural communication in institutional settings are therefore also welcome. Final call for papers for the 4th International Conference of Hispanic Linguistics, to be held at Swansea University, Wales, 27th - 29th March 2008. The goal of this Conference is to bring together researchers working on sociolinguistics, pragmatics, conversation and discourse analysis, and reflect the growth of interest in these and related areas of Hispanic linguistics. Our conference theme, Spanish at Work, is not limited to how Spanish is used in its own right but includes also how it 'works alongside' other languages in contexts such as Spanish in business communication, including call centres and service encounters; Spanish in health-care and judicial contexts; Spanish in educational settings; Spanish in the mass media; Spanish in political communication. Proposals for papers around issues relating to bilingualism / multilingualism and inter - / cross- cultural communication in institutional settings are therefore also welcome, and we also welcome abstracts for papers exploring any aspects of the way in which Spanish is used in society. Presentations will be 30-minute research papers inclusive of 10 minutes for discussion and questions. The languages of the conference are English and Spanish. We intend to publish a selection of peer-reviewed articles. Una aproximación desde el Análisis Crítico del Discurso' Miranda Stewart (Strathclyde University, Scotland): 'The Pragmatics of parliamentary discourse' Ana Celia Zentella (UC San Diego, California, USA): 'Hired for speaking Spanish, fired for speaking Spanish' Workshop Paul Meara (Swansea University, Wales): 'Quantitative methods in the study of Spanish in institutional contexts of communication' Please submit abstracts for papers by email (word attachment; 300 words max.) to n.lorenzo-dus swansea.ac.uk no later than 15th November 2007. The aim of those days is the exchange between young researchers working in different fields which may have common goals. They favor now and further scientific collaborations. JJCAAS 2008 will allow young researchers to valorize their work by presenting them orally. JJCAAS are organized for young researchers, i.e. Master, PhD students and postdoc-fellows. We wish to welcome 50 visitors in Toulouse for this issue.
