5th Days of Swiss Linguistics Date: 20-Nov-2008 - 21-Nov-2008 Location: Winterthur, Zurich, Switzerland Contact: Esther Galliker Contact Email: info.5tdl zhaw.ch Meeting URL: http://www.zhaw.ch/de/linguistik/5tdl.html Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; General Linguistics Meeting Description: The Days of Swiss Linguistics conference traditionally provides young scientists with a platform to discuss their research in workshops and addresses current issues in its plenary speeches. Plenary speeches: The subject of the plenary speeches this year is ''Measurement in Linguistics''. This is a challenging topic for all areas of linguistic research and provides the methodical and methodological background required to identify empirically supported and theoretically sound answers to current questions. The significance of language, multilingualism, communication, linguistic variation and linguistic competence in social interaction is becoming increasingly recognised in view of the current socio-cultural diversity and the tension in social relations. Describing and assessing these factors appropriately has become a challenge for society and science, and is perceived as the basis of social cohesion and inclusion. In this context, linguistics as a whole is gaining importance and is called upon to develop substantive, transparent and applicable answers. The 5th Days of Swiss Linguistics conference focuses on ''measurement'' in the sense of ''assigning values'' and establishing methodical approaches that are theoretically and empirically sound. Keynote speakers: Professor Dr. Susanne Günthner, Westfälische Willhelms-Universität Münster Professor Dr. Gabriele Griffin, University of York Professor Dr. Lorenza Mondada, Université Lumière Lyon2 Professor Dr. Douglas Biber, Northern Arizona University Professor Dr. Tim McNamara, University of Melbourne Workshops: In addition to ''Measurement in Linguistics'', which is addressed in the plenary speeches, topics from all areas of linguistics are welcome, in particular from junior researchers.
