Since this is a year in which the international ICHOLS conference is taking place (Potsdam, 2008), the colloquium is a one-day event only. 2008 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henry Fowler, author of Fowler's Modern English Usage, published in 1926 and still influential today. To mark the occasion, we are delighted to announce a plenary lecture by Professor Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade (University of Leiden) on: Henry Fowler and the Birth of the Usage Guide Professor Tieken-Boon van Ostade heads a major project on The codifiers and the English language: Tracing the norms of Standard English at the University of Leiden.
