Meeting Description
The aim of this colloquium is to further our understanding of the linguistic
properties of Creole languages. More specifically, this colloquium will seek to
examine the typological status of Creoles by examining empirical evidence
concerning the morphological, phonological, syntactic and semantic properties
found in Creole languages. The possibility of establishing sub-groups of Creole
languages and the relation between the linguistic features found in Creole
languages and the linguistic features of the languages in the contact situation
that gave rise to the Creole will also be studied. Overall the contributions
will further our understanding of the typological characteristics of Creole
languages.
Papers with a cross-linguistic perspective (i.e. involving more than a single
Creole or other language) dealing with the following topics are encouraged:
a) Comparisons of the linguistic properties of Creole languages in general:
b) Comparisons of the linguistic properties of Creole languages sharing a common
lexifier language;
c) Comparisons of the linguistic properties of Creole languages with different
lexifier languages;
d) Comparisons between linguistic properties of Creole languages and those of
other language families;
e) Investigations of the possible sub-groupings of Creole languages based on
linguistic properties;
f) Contrasts between Creole languages and non-Creole languages.
All those participants whose papers are accepted by the selection committee will
have free accommodation at the Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto during the
colloquium. Space is, however, limited to a total of fifteen participants and
seven invited speakers.
All abstracts must follow the attached guidelines and must be received by
January 22nd 2008.
The selection committee will inform all those who have submitted an abstract of
their acceptance or rejection by February 22nd 2008.
Guidelines for Abstracts
Abstracts must respect the following guidelines established by the Canadian
Linguistic Association:
1. Abstracts may be no longer than one (1) page, (21.6 x 27.9 cm / 8.5 x 11in)
single-spaced in a 12-point font, with 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins.
2. A complete list of references cited in the abstract must also be submitted on
an additional page. In order to help ensure anonymity, abstracts should not
contain excessive references to their authors' publications. Furthermore, the
abstract should not contain acknowledgements for grants or to granting agencies.
References in the abstract should normally be limited to published works.
3. Abstracts should contain
a) a title;
b) a clear and explicit statement of the research question to be examined;
c) a clear statement of the research context, including key references;
d) an indication of the main arguments involved, including key examples, if
applicable.
e) a statement of the conclusions reached and an assessment of their significance.
4. Abstracts must be submitted in two copies, one anonymous and the other with
name(s) and affiliation(s) of the submitters.
5. Participants are limited to one individual and one joint abstract submission,
or two joint submissions.
Abstracts must be submitted electronically, as either PDF (preferred), .DOC or
.RTF files. If you use phonetic transcriptions or any other special symbols,
please ensure that the necessary character fonts are embedded. Send your

The deadline for submission is January 22nd 2008. All submissions will be
acknowledged. Abstracts received after the submission deadline will be
considered at the discretion of the selection committee.

VIIIe Congrès International de Linguistique Française
La linguistique fait aujourd'hui face à des questions nouvelles dont certaines
supposent, même, un profond réexamen de la distribution interne des tâches
assignées à chacune de ses disciplines. En conséquence du développement
croissant de la sémantique, la distinction traditionnelle entre morphologie,
syntaxe et sémantique semble s'être progressivement estompée: leurs objectifs,
leurs lois, leurs notions instrumentales se sont imbriquées, jusqu'à ce qu'il
soit devenu nécessaire de batir une réflexion sereine à propos de la relation
entre ces disciplines.
Les diverses positions semblent se radicaliser, explicitement ou implicitement,
autour de deux orientations fondamentalement opposées: celle qui souscrit à une
totale autonomie de la morphologie, la syntaxe et la sémantique, face à celle
qui défend une relation hiérarchique entre elles. C'est cette dernière optique
qui admet le plus grand nombre de variables, selon que l'on considère centrale
l'une ou l'autre de ces disciplines, selon que l'on considère que l'une d'entre
elles détermine les autres ou en est déterminée. Dans ce débat, syntaxe et
sémantique se voient tour à tour privilégiées.
Ce VIIIe Congrès International de Linguistique Française, sous les auspices de
l'Association des Professeurs de Français des Universités Espagnoles (APFUE), se
donne pour objectif de réfléchir et de soumettre à débat l'articulation de ces
trois disciplines linguistiques (morphologie, syntaxe et sémantique), leurs
limites respectives et leurs interactions. Il s'agit de répondre à des questions
générales du genre: est-il posible de séparer radicalement syntaxe et
sémantique? morphologie et sémantique? peut-on expliquer les faits
morphologiques et les faits syntaxiques avec totale indépendance de la sémantique?
Les conférences plénières seront prononcées par quatre linguistes prestigieux,
qui rassembleront les réflexions aportées dans les diverses séances au cours
d'une Table Ronde en guise de conclusion et de clôture du Congrès.
Nous invitons tous les chercheurs en Linguistique Française à participer à ce
débat par des contributions générales ou des études particulières, offrant une
reponse à quelques-unes des questions posées par le problème central suscité ici.

Les communications auront une durée de 20 minutes suivies de 10 minutes de
discussion.
Les propositions de communication seront envoyées sous forme de resume anonyme
de deux pages (Times New Roman, 12 p, marges 2'5, format RTF o Word), devant
contenir, obligatoirement:
- titre
- position à l'égard du thème du Congrès
- présentation du sujet étudié
- hypothèses et objectifs du travail proposé
- breve relation de bibliographie (éviter de citer les travaux personnels)
Les résumés seront envoyés comme fichier attaché et le message électronique
l'accompagnant contiendra les coordonnées de l'auteur ou des auteurs (nom,
affiliation, adresse professionnelle et/ou personnelle) et le titre du résumé
joint en fichier attaché, signalant comme objet du message ''VIII CILF''.
