Message 1: Dan Parker & 100 Words for Snow
Date: 31-Mar-2007
From: linguist <linguistlinguistlist.org>
Subject: Dan Parker & 100 Words for Snow

Dear LINGUIST Subscribers,

It wasn't too long ago that I found myself spellbound by the notion that
Eskimos could have 100 words for snow! Fortunately, I had a few good
professors at The University of Toledo, where I received my B.A. in English and
linguistics, who kindly pointed out to me that the Eskimos really don't have
100 words for snow and that the whole thing was a hoax. Crushed, I persevered.
After ridding myself of the many similar misconceptions that plague those just
entering the study of linguistics, I decided that I really would like to go to
graduate school to pursue this field further.

Luckily those professors who kindly disillusioned me of so many
language-related myths also pointed me to Eastern Michigan University and The
LINGUIST List for a graduate program. As a first year graduate student and a
graduate assistant for LINGUIST, I have learned more about linguistics and the
professional infrastructure than I could have ever imagined at this point so
early in my career. Currently I am the Web developer for the Chaco Languages
Documentation Project and a team member of LL-MAP, an NSF-funded project that
utilizes advanced technologies to annotate geo-referenced language information.

As we all know, it is extremely difficult to find adequate funding in the world
of academics. Representing an organization that is entirely supported by user
donations, I cannot stress how much we value your support. As all donations go
directly to funding the graduate students who work tirelessly to keep LINGUIST
running, your contribution will directly affect how you obtain your resources
about the field of linguistics.

In closing, I just want to express how extremely grateful I am to be part of
The LINGUIST List crew, and how I look forward to making my own contribution to
this field. So please remember that your contribution not only ensures that
LINGUIST will be able to continue for another year, it also provides financial
support for the education and training of future linguists.

Thank you for your support,

Daniel Parker
LINGUIST Editor

Message 2: FYI & Media: Getting the Word Out
Date: 31-Mar-2007
From: linguist <linguistlinguistlist.org>
Subject: FYI & Media: Getting the Word Out

Dear Subscribers,

The FYI and Media sections on The LINGUIST List web site are two of our more
unusual sections. For those who are not familiar with the term, FYI is an
acronym for the phrase "For Your Information." This section is where you can
announce information that would be of general interest to the linguistics
community. Some of the issues that get posted as FYIs include calls for
working papers, calls for book contributions, announcements of seasonal schools
or courses, announcements of new graduate programs, and announcements of grants
and funding sources.

Our Media section is the place where subscribers like you can post issues
having to do with linguistics-related issues or events reported in the media.
Issues that often get posted here include online chats or radio and television
interviews with noted linguists (on BBC, National Public Radio, etc.), and
non-scholarly articles about language that appear in media outlets such as New
York Times, Los Angeles Times, or magazines such as Atlantic Monthly.

So next time you read an interesting article in a newspaper or magazine or see
a television show that discusses issues concerning any aspect of language or
linguistics, please send a notice our way so we can share that information with
the rest of the linguistics community. Please go to our URL and fill out the
form at: http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.cfm

We look forward to receiving your input. At the same time, if you value such
sections as FYI and Media as regular features of LINGUIST, we hope that you
will take the opportunity now during our Fund Drive 2007 to make a
contribution, no matter how small, that will help us continue serving your
needs. Thank you!

Sincerely,
The LINGUIST Crew

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $55,000. This money will go to help keep the
List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Fund Drive 2007
LINGUIST List Superhero Adventure for some Fund Drive fun!

http://linguistlist.org/donation/fund-drive2007/

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
