Subject: Language and Gender Course: Textbook Suggestions
E-mail this message to a friend
I have just found out that I will teach an undergraduate version of
Language & Gender next fall. I was wondering if you might have any
suggestions for a textbook. The course is taken mostly by first- and
second-year students who have no background in linguistics and in gender
studies, and I typically devote one third of the course to issues of sexism
in language and two thirds to how language is used by women and men. In the
past, I have used Mary Talbot’s textbook and found it quite good, but the
book is getting relatively old (published already 10 years ago), and one of
my colleagues informed me that it was not available last year (I haven’t
checked what its status this year).
Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
