Abstract:
African languages are predominantly tonal. Hence, the recent issue of the Frankfurter Afrikanistische Blätter (FAB), Number 17, is dedicated to tone systems in African languages. The articles contained in the present volume cover the four major language phyla: Afroasiatic, Khoisan, Niger-Congo, as well as Nilo-Saharan. The numerous examples and discussions are intended to contribute towards the explanation and understanding of various tonal phenomena often encountered in the study and analysis of African languages. The contributions include:
Tones in Jukunoid languages (Rose Juliet Anyanwu) The functions of the morphosyntactic tone in Bidiya (Rose Juliet Anyanwu & Khalil Alio) Rhythmic units and stress / word accent mobility in Fula (Rose Juliet Anyanwu & Abdourahmane Diallo) A survey of Northern Khoisan tonology (Rose Juliet Anyanwu & Bernhard KÖHLER) Tonal cases in Mushere (Hermann Jungraithmayr) Some remarks on nominal tone in Maa (Antje Meissner) The variable status of nasals as tone bearing units in Kabiyè (David Roberts) The tones of Iko (Eno-Abasi Urua)
