Full Title: Grammaticalization and Pragmaticalization in Romanian Date: 03-Oct-2008 - 04-Oct-2008 Location: Bucharest, Romania Contact Person: Rodica Zafiu Meeting Email: rodica_zafiu yahoo.com Linguistic Field(s): Historical Linguistics Call Deadline: 10-Jul-2008 Meeting Description: The Faculty of Letters from the University of Bucharest is organizing a two day conference on grammaticalization in Romanian, on October 3-4, 2008. Conference languages: Romanian, English, French. The organizers of the conference 'Grammaticalization and Pragmaticalization in Romanian' (3-4 October 2008) have extended the deadline for submitting abstracts. The new deadline is July 10th 2008. We welcome abstracts on any topic related to grammaticalization and pragmaticalization. The topics we suggest are: I. Theoretical aspects regarding grammaticalization and pragmaticalization. II. Typological, comparative and historical perspectives an grammaticalization. III. Specific aspects of grammaticalization and pragmaticalization in Romanian. Invited speakers: Christiane Marchello-Nizia, Ian Roberts. Scientific committee: Gabriela Pana Dindelegan, Alexandra Cornilescu, Sanda Ripeanu Reinheimer, Larisa Avram, Rodica Zafiu. The abstracts should contains the participant's name, affiliation and email address. The talks can be in English, French and Romanian. Each talk will last 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts can be sent to: gramaticalizare gmail.com, rodica_zafiu yahoo.com, blanca.croitor gmail.com. Participants will receive a notification of acceptance before July 20th 2008. The conference fee is 40 euros (20 euros for students, including Ph.D. students). The fee will include coffee breaks, lunches and xerox copies. The conferences of the keynote speakers and a selection of the talks will be published in a special issue of 'Revue Roumaine de Linguistique'' (http://www.lingv.ro/rrlsite/rrl.htm).

The theme of this year's conference is "The Interface of Language Documentation and Formal Linguistics." Talks addressing technology and language documentation are also strongly encouraged. Abstracts from all areas from linguistics are welcomed but abstracts fitting with the theme will be given preference. Abstracts are invited for 20-minute talks with a 10 minute question period to follow. Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per author. Invited Speakers B. Elan Dresher (University of Toronto) Alana Johns (University of Toronto) Mary Willie (University of Arizona, Tucson) Submission Guidelines Abstracts should be anonymous and in PDF form, limited to one page (with 1 inch margins on all sides and 11 point font size) with an optional second page for examples and references. Any non-standard fonts should be embedded in the PDF document. Abstracts should include up to five keywords after the title, including subfield and language (family), in order to help us match the abstracts to reviewers familiar with the topics discussed in the abstracts. Submissions by graduate students are particularly welcome. Graduate students are eligible to apply for the best student abstract award with the cash benefit of $150. If you would like to have your abstract considered for this award, note your current student status at the top of the abstract.
