Prof. Wang Jialing of Tianjin Normal University passed away on 12:30 AM
June, 23. He died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 74.

Professor Wang is one of the first to introduce Optimality Theory into
Mainland China. Most of us would also be familiar with his work in the
phonology of Northern Mandarin languages like Tianjin and Beijing Mandarin.

More importantly, Prof Wang has cultivated many students and has been as
kind to junior linguists who may not have the fortune of learning in his
classroom.

China has lost a great linguist, scholar. The world has lost a great
teacher who has been producing many of the finest linguists in the area of
Chinese phonology.
