Intensive Workshop: Intonation in English Date: 01-Sep-2008 - 04-Sep-2008 Location: Kowloon, Hong Kong Contact: Catherine Law Contact Email: egclaw inet.polyu.edu.hk Meeting URL: http://www.engl.polyu.edu.hk/events/intonworkshop2008/ Linguistic Field(s): Computational Linguistics; Phonetics; Phonology; Text/Corpus Linguistics Subject Language(s): English (eng) Meeting Description: This four-day intensive workshop is conducted by Prof. William Greaves of Glendon College, York University, Canada. The goal of this short course is to introduce you to two computer programs, PRAAT and CORPUS TOOL, and to review Intonation in the Grammar of English by Michael Halliday and William Greaves. It is not at all necessary to have your own computer to take the course, but if you own a laptop, please bring it. PRAAT is an excellent tool which can be used in virtually any computer for very sophisticated phonetic analysis. The instructor will make extensive use of PRAAT to introduce the patterns of English intonation. CORPUS TOOL is a new and more powerful successor to Mick O'Donnell's SYSTEMIC CODER. The instructor will demonstrate and use only one of the many features in the program: the creation and editing of system networks. It is far easier to do this with CORPUS TOOL than with editing programs such as Word or graphics programs such as Paint. The course includes four lecture hours per day, plus ''hands on'' work each day in a language laboratory. Participants in the lecture will be encouraged to form ''pods'' around those with laptops (this has proved to be very effective).
