Meeting Description:

This workshop is part of the annual Nordic Network for Intercultural
Communication (NIC) Conference on Intercultural Communication. The overall theme
of the conference is 'Cultures in Translation'. The conference is organized by
The Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages at the University of
Iceland (http://www.vigdis.hi.is) in cooperation with the Institute of
Linguistics at the University of Iceland, the Anthropological Institute at the
University of Iceland, and the Intercultural Centre in Iceland. The conference
will be opened by Madame Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, UNESCO's Goodwill Ambassador for
Language and former President of Iceland (1980-1996).

The Glory of Babel: celebrating diversity in languages and linguistics

Papers are invited on any aspect of linguistic diversity, including typological
diversity and dialectal variation. The topics include typological linguistics,
especially syntax and phonology, as well as linguistic ecology and the study of
endangered languages and heritage languages. The goal of this workshop is to
bring together scholars approaching linguistic diversity from different
theoretical perspectives; hence the mention of diversity of languages and
linguistics in the workshop subtitle.

Among keynote speakers will be:
Professor Maria Polinsky, Department of Linguistics, Harvard University

Workshop Organizer: Thórhallur Eythórsson, University of Iceland

Presentations will be for 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of discussion.

XXVII Annual Conference to be held at the University of Castilla-La Mancha
(Spain) on March 26-28, 2009. The topic of the conference is 'Ways and Modes of
Human Communication'

Call for Papers

27TH AESLA International Conference: ''Ways and Modes of Human Communication''

This International Conference will feature the following plenary speakers:
- Gunther Kress (University of London).
- Salvatore Attardo (Texas A&M University-Commerce, USA).
- Charles Forceville (Universiteit van Amsterdam).
- Alan Cienki (Vrije Universiteit, Ámsterdam).
- Mª Luisa Villanueva (Universitat Jaume I, Castellón).

The Conference will cover the following areas:
- Language acquisition
- Language teaching
- Language for specific purposes
- Language psychology, child language and psycholinguistics
- Sociolinguistics
- Pragmatics
- Discourse analysis
- Corpus linguistics, computational linguistics and linguistic engineering
- Lexicology and lexicography
- Translation and interpreting

Proposals (pertaining to the areas mentioned above and max. 500 words, figures
and references apart) must be submitted using the page of the conference
(http://www.aesla.uji.es) no later than October 31st, 2008. Reviewers will
evaluate the contributions and will contact the authors regarding acceptance or
rejection (date: November 30th). Complete papers (aprox. 2500 words, references
included) should be sent no later than January 15th 2009 (follow the style sheet
at http://www.aesla.uji.es/?q=reslahojadeestilo)
