Languages differ with respect to which functional categories they overtly
realize. Whereas some overtly realize case, others overtly realize the
initiation node in the verb phrase (also known as "little v"). This project
aims at investigating which functional categories are overtly realized in
so-called "analytic" languages and to find out whether they form a natural
class. To this end we will study two language groups, which are both
supposedly analytic, but which are geographically and genetically wide
apart from one another: Sinitic (East Asia) and Kwa (West Africa). The
results will be relevant for general theorizing on (i) language types; (ii)
the nature of functional categories; (iii) the distribution of functional
categories; and (iv) the question whether the verbal and nominal domains
are as parallel in structure as is often assumed. The researchers that will
be actively involved in the project are dr. Enoch Aboh and dr. Umberto
Ansaldo (both Amsterdam) and prof. dr. Lisa L.S. Cheng and dr. Rint Sybesma
(both Leiden), plus two post-doctoral fellows, who will each be the main
investigator of one of the following two sub-projects involving the verbal
and the clausal domain, and the nominal domain respectively.
In this context, we invite applications for one post-doctoral researcher,
to be the main investigator of the sub-project focusing on the verbal and
clausal domains. This sub-project deals with the functional categories in
the verbal and clausal domains of Sinitic and Kwa, against the background
of what is known about functional categories in these domains more
generally. The post-doctoral fellow responsible for this sub-project will
be stationed at the Amsterdam Center of Language and Communication
(ACLC)/University of Amsterdam.
The ideal candidate has a proven strong interest in typological research,
comparative syntax and the theory of clause structure. Though the study on
the verbal domain and clausal domain in Kwa and Sinitic centers around
properties of isolating languages, the conclusions of this research are
also relevant for non-isolating languages as well (e.g., Indo-European).
Accordingly, the candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong knowledge of
most relevant theories of clause structure on these languages as well.
Familiarity with Niger Congo/Kwa (or Sinitic) is desirable but not required.
Although each post-doctoral fellow within this project will be responsible
for one of the sub-projects mentioned above, the project as a whole is to
be conducted in collaboration with the other researchers, especially the
post-doctoral fellow responsible for the study of the nominal domain.
Your Profile:
- the successful candidate has finished (or is about to finish) an
excellent doctoral dissertation in theoretical syntax, preferably
comparative syntax;
- s/he has proven strong interest in data driven research as well
typological issues;
- s/he is willing to work on both Kwa and Sinitic data;
- s/he is prepared to conduct short fieldwork trips;
- s/he has the ability to work independently but is at the same time
willing to collaborate closely with other members of the research team;
- s/he has good writing skills and is fluent in English;
- s/he is expected to take up teaching responsibilities under the
supervision of the project leaders.
