Georgia State University's Department of Applied Linguistics/ESL is accepting applications for two anticipated tenure-track positions at the assistant professor level. The Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL consists of three interrelated academic programs (B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics), an English as a Second Language (ESL) program that provides instruction for university matriculated ESL students at undergraduate and graduate levels, and a large Intensive English Program (IEP) that provides a comprehensive pre-academic course of study in academic language development for ESL students who wish to matriculate at Georgia State University (GSU) or other post-secondary institutions. Candidates will have a doctorate in Applied Linguistics or a closely related field by the time of the appointment. One position is for a specialist in second language acquisition. Specializations of interest for the other position include L2 reading and the development of second language teachers. The ideal candidates will also have strong background and interest in one or more of the following: syntax and morphology, psycholinguistics, assessment, and quantitative research methods. Successful candidates must demonstrate a coherent research agenda, record of relevant publications, and demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses, particularly with applications to second language pedagogy. Preferred candidates will also have experience teaching ESL/EAP and a record of external funding. Letters of application, a curriculum vitae, copies of research publications, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and 3 letters of professional recommendation should be sent to the address listed below. Review of the applicants will begin November 4, 2008 but will continue until successful candidates are identified. The preferred starting date is fall semester, 2009. Salary is commensurate with experience. Atlanta is a multi-cultural urban setting.
