Description:
The University of Macau is a government-funded institution located in the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. The Department of English, in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, is seeking to appoint a Head of Department, at the rank of Full Professor (or Chair Professor for a suitably distinguished candidate) as soon as possible but no later than September 1st, 2009. The Department of English has a teaching staff of over 20 members (90% hold Ph.D.s) and offers an undergraduate degree programme in English Studies and three M.A. programmes in English (M.A. in English Studies, M.A. in Applied English, M.A. in Translation Studies). The Department also offers Ph.D.s in English Studies. The Head of Department of English The successful candidate must demonstrate a broad understanding of, and appreciation for, the whole area of English Studies even though this position is specifically for a specialist in English Linguistics. Candidates should also have appropriate administrative experience at a senior level and must be able to demonstrate substantial leadership abilities. The appointee will be required to teach courses at the undergraduate and postgraduates levels and to provide M.A. and Ph.D. thesis supervision. A key component of this position will be the development of research in all areas of English Studies and the successful candidate must have a distinguished record of publication in English Linguistics at an international level. The Department is eager to develop its research output and the Head will be required to provide strategic leadership in this area. The area of specialisation within English Linguistics is open but applications are particularly encouraged from those who may have a research record in cross-cultural linguistic areas. Linguistics has been designated a Key Research Area within the University of Macau, and the successful candidate will ideally contribute to research and publication in at least one of the following current research areas: bilingualism,language acquisition, language contact or sociolinguistics. Annual Salary (taxable) Annual salary ranging between MOP 823,640 and MOP 889,720 (full entitlement according to the internal rules and regulations of the University), calculated based on the rank of Full Professor, is offered according to academic qualification, current position and professional experience (USD1 approx. = MOP8). Current local maximum income tax rate is 12%. Under special circumstances where Chair Professorship is offered, higher remuneration is possible.
