Within the Department of Communication and Information Sciences at Tilburg University, we are looking for two new enthusiastic and competent Ph.D. colleagues: Ph.D.-student (1) m/f Vacancy number 500.08.26, 3 or 4 years, 1.0 fte Ph.D.-student (2) m/f Vacancy number 500.08.27, 4 years, 1.0 fte Ph.D.-student 1 will be appointed on the project entitled "Producer vs. addressee oriented processes in producing referring expressions". The project is part of the study of referring expressions in human communication, an area which is covered in different research projects in the Department of Communication and Information Sciences. This project in particular intends to offer further explanation of how the production of referring expressions, viewed as a multimodal phenomenon, is shaped by both audience design considerations and cognitive constraints on the part of the speaker. Ph.D.-student 2 will be appointed on the project "Visual metaphor: a Psycholinguistic Perspective" (in particular subproject 3), funded by an 'Open Competition' grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), a project in which Tilburg University, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen cooperate. The overarching goal of the project is to exploit the vast psycholinguistic expertise on metaphor in language for the study of the identification, description, and process modelling of metaphor in visuals. Ask for the complete project description Requirements: For both positions, we seek a candidate with a background in psycholinguistics, communication & information sciences, social sciences or some related area, with experience in doing experiments, and (depending on the project) a proven interest in one or more of the following area's: speech or writing production, discourse reference, multimodal reference, audience design, visual perception, multimodal communication, metaphor theory. The Ph.D. candidates have a (research) master degree in one of the aforementioned areas, a strong interest in doing research, excellent writing skills and a good command of English. Developing and defending a project plan within the research area of the project will be part of the procedure. Terms of employment: The Ph.D. candidates will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as a Ph.D.-student (promovendus) with a starting salary of minimally 2.000.-- gross per month in the first year, up to 2.441.-- in the third year or 2.558.-- in the fourth year (amounts fulltime). The selected candidate is expected to have written a Ph.D. thesis by the end of the contract (which may be based on articles).
