Description:
The Faculty of Language, Literature, Culture invites applications for the
position of a W3-Professor of Applied Linguistics as Director of the Centre
for Competence Development (CCD), as of 1st October 2009.
Reference is made to § 70 section 6 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (HHG) and
conditions of employment based on § 71 HHG.
We seek candidates who have completed a first-rate Ph.D. degree in
linguistics and have proven their academic excellence in applied
linguistics (including relevant aspects of theoretical linguistics and
empirical methodology), in particular in one or more of the following
research areas: specialized discourse (e.g. language of academia and
economics), lingua-franca communication and learner language use,
intercultural communication and the use of new technologies and digital
media for teaching and learning foreign languages. The successful
candidate's future research projects should both be integrated with
on-going research activities in the various research centres of the
University of Giessen (in particular the Centre for Media and
Interactivity, but also the Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture and
the Centre for Eastern European Studies) and be relevant to the development
of the curriculum of the new Centre for Competence Development (CCD). The
CCD is a new institution of the University of Giessen with two departments:
a) foreign languages and intercultural competencies, b) key competencies
and employability skills. In the long run, the CCD is also expected to
harbour the career service and coordinate the alumni management of the
University of Giessen. As the successful candidate will also be appointed
as Director of the CCD, previous experience in the area of research and
teaching coordination and management is highly desirable. As a Professor of
Applied Linguistics, the successful candidate will be involved in the
teaching programme of the new Bachelor and Master Programmes (e.g. the
Bachelor/Master programme 'Modern Languages, Cultures and Economics') and
the various study programmes in teacher education.
