The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the largest government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong, with a total student headcount of about 27,200, of which 13,500 are full-time students, 11,400 are part-time students, and 2,300 are mixed-mode students. It offers programmes at Doctorate, Master's, Bachelor's degrees and Higher Diploma levels. The University has 26 academic departments and units grouped under six faculties, as well as 2 independent schools. It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,250. The total consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$4 billion per year. Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies Assistant Professor in Chinese Linguistics (two posts) The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is strong in Applied Chinese Language Studies. It offers bachelor, master, and doctoral programmes in Translating, Interpreting, Bilingual Studies, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language teaching, and teaching Chinese as a second language. Within the department, there is a Centre for Translation Studies, a Testing Unit, and a Chinese Language Centre which provides training in Chinese language and Putonghua for the whole university. Duties The appointees will be required to: (a) teach and contribute to curriculum design and development at degree and taught postgraduate level; (b) engage in scholarly research in their area of expertise; and (c) undertake administrative duties in academic and departmental affairs. Qualifications Applicants should have: (a) an earned doctoral degree in Linguistics or Applied Linguistics, with specialisation in Syntax, Phonetics, Phonology, Psycholinguistics or Language Acquisition; (b) effective classroom teaching skills, preferably in English; (c) a proven track record in research in his/her area; and (d) native or near native mastery of Chinese. Remuneration and Conditions of Service : Salary offered will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointments will be made on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. Remuneration package will be highly competitive. Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
