University or Organization: Nuance Communications Department: Linguistics Job Location: Merelbeke, Belgium Web Address: http://www.nuance.com Job Rank: Acoustic Data Creator & Administrator Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Phonetics Description: The Acoustic Data Creator & Administrator will work in a team responsible for delivery of linguistic resources that will be used in speech and language technology. He or she will report to the Linguistic Resources Manager. The person will work on a temporary basis and based in the Nuance Communications International offices, in Merelbeke (near Ghent). 2. Tasks and responsibilities: The Acoustic Data Creator & Administrator is responsible for creation, description, administration, quality control, follow-up, support and maintenance of acoustic databases and their overviews. These acoustic databases are to be used for further speech technology development at different locations in Nuance worldwide. All of the acoustic data creation and administration efforts will be done considering the optimal cost, quality and planning requirements. He or she will be responsible for: - preparation, execution and follow-up of the data creation tasks, - assuring the quality of the recorded speech by performing repeated checks in every step of the process, - execution and follow-up of the sub tasks : recruiting, scheduling, recording, annotation - executing quality control and feedback, - set-up and testing of the recording scenario and the recording hardware, - annotation of recorded data according to specifications and in a highly consistent manner, - gathering all required inputs for documenting the speech database, - reporting about progress, status, quality, cost etc. , - formulating, documenting and implementing agreed proposals about improving the scenario and procedures used, - training and follow up of junior colleagues, - support to partners involved in recording and annotation operations, - all administration and classification related to the acoustic data, - registering, labeling and producing the required archive and delivery copies, - keeping library and catalogue databases up to date, - quality assessment of acoustic data copies and descriptions, - follow-up on acoustic data completeness and acceptance, - reporting about progress and quality of the descriptions, classifications etc., - producing overviews to document work status, progress and planning, - formulating proposals about improving working methods and concepts, - feedback and support to local team(s) involved in acoustic data, - documenting acoustic data using a description template. 3. Qualifications and profile: - Have a positive and responsible attitude and likes to do field work, also abroad, - Able to work independently and under stress, - Have good communication skills, - Experience in application of computer software and tools in Windows environment, - Able to work accurately in a consistent manner, - Good working knowledge of English, - Have a logic and structured, problem solving approach. 4. Education: - At least two years of post high school education, - Background in linguistics is a plus, - Additional course for an area of interest: additional language, phonetics, linguistics.
