The institute will have two sessions, each lasting two weeks. The first will run from June 22 through July 3 and the second session from July 6 through July 17. Participants will have the option of attending the first session, the second session, or both. A broad range of topics in applied linguistics will be represented, with particular focus on the teaching and learning of additional languages. General information about the 2009 Summer Institute in Applied Linguistics can be found at: http://outreach.psu.edu/programs/applied-linguistics/ Summer Institute in Applied Linguistics The Summer Institute in Applied Linguistics is an initiative of the Center for Language Acquisition that brings leading scholars in applied linguistics to Penn State University (University Park Campus, State College, PA) to share their cutting-edge research by teaching courses in their area of specialization, delivering lectures, conducting workshops, and participating in formal and informal discussion groups. Courses are organized as 1-credit modules for which Penn State graduate credit can be earned and transferred to other institutions. Over a four-week period, approximately thirty courses are offered in addition to invited plenary lectures. Participants may earn up to six graduate credits. Travel Grants to attend Summer Institute 2009 $1000 Solidarity and Merit Grants for Graduate Student Attendance at the Summer Institute in Applied Linguistics, Penn State, June 22 - July 17, 2009 The American Association for Applied Linguistics and Penn State's Center for Language Acquisition have provided funding for three $1000.00 grants to attend the 2009 Summer Institute in Applied Linguistics at Penn State. Graduate students in good standing, in applied linguistics or a related discipline, are encouraged to apply. Each of the three grants will balance criteria such as solidarity with individuals traveling from less represented or distant locations, academic accomplishments, and promise of future contributions to applied linguistics. Applicants should submit 1) a one-page (single-spaced) narrative that includes a description of interest(s) in applied linguistics (i.e., current and projected future research interests, relevant personal information) that includes a brief statement with specific reasons for attending the 2009 Summer Institute in Applied Linguistics and 2) a letter of recommendation from a professional applied linguist who can comment on the applicant's strengths and promise.
