Variation, Social Cognition and Pluricentric Languages
Within the framework of the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Societas Linguistica
Europaea to be held at the Universidade de Lisboa, 9-12 September 2009, we would
like to propose a workshop on internal variation and sociolinguistic diversity
of pluricentric languages (i.e. languages with different national varieties).
This workshop aims at bringing together researchers who are interested in the
social and cognitive aspects of variation and change within pluricentric
languages, with specific emphasis on the relationship between national
varieties. In particular, it raises the question to what extent (and how)
language-internal variation, culture and cognition combine and intertwine.

Workshop at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea
University of Lisbon, 9-12 September 2009
We especially welcome papers that take into consideration one or more of the
following topics and questions:
- language variation, culture and cognition: do local and national linguistic
differences reflect cultural differences? To what extent do the former correlate
with conceptual differences?
- perception and evaluation of national varieties: how do language users
perceive national varieties and how do they evaluate them attitudinally? Which
cultural and cognitive models are used in order to categorize and evaluate local
and national linguistic differences? How are purist or pro-independence
attitudes manifested and what are the consequences for the development of
national varieties?
- objective and subjective linguistic distances: is there a correlation between
objective linguistic distances, perceived distances, and language attitudes? How
can we measure and parameterize diachronic and synchronic convergence or
divergence between national varieties?
- mutual intelligibility between national varieties: to what extent do objective
linguistic distances and language attitudes influence intelligibility?
- correlations between variables: to what extent do lexical, grammatical and
phonological variables correlate when it comes to the stratification of national
varieties?

Papers should be in English or in French. Presentations should be adjusted to a
30-minute slot (20 min. + 10 min. for discussion). Interested colleagues are
invited to send an e-mail to Augusto Soares da Silva (assilvabraga.ucp.pt) with
their name, affiliation and a provisional abstract before 12 December.

Los días 29, 30 y 31 de julio y 1 de agosto de 2009 se llevará a cabo el V
Encuentro de Gramática Generativa en la Escuela Superior de Idiomas de la
Universidad Nacional del Comahue de la ciudad de General Roca (Río Negro,
Argentina). El principal objetivo de este encuentro es, al igual que en las
cuatro ediciones anteriores, estimular la discusión acerca de los temas
salientes de la gramática desde distintos modelos formales y, paralelamente,
establecer un ámbito de encuentro e intercambio para los grupos de investigación
sobre estos temas en nuestro país. A diferencia de los otros encuentros, esta
edición contará con un Workshop en adquisición dedicado a la memoria de Celia
Jakubowicz.

Trabajos
Habrá una mesa única, sin sesiones paralelas. El tiempo de exposición para cada
trabajo será de treinta minutos, con diez minutos adicionales para preguntas
(aproximadamente 12 páginas A4 con letra Times New Roman 12 y espaciado simple).
Habrá también una sesión de posters.
La selección de los trabajos se basará en los resúmenes, que podrán ser enviados
hasta el 15 de marzo de 2009 y en los que deberá explicitarse marco teórico,
hipótesis y objetivos del trabajo (extensión máxima: 2 páginas A4 con letra
Times New Roman 12 y espaciado simple). El 30 de abril se informará a los
autores si su ponencia ha sido aceptada para su presentación.
Los trabajos deberán ser contribuciones originales a la teoría lingüística y/o a
la descripción gramatical, desde distintos modelos teóricos, de lenguas
particulares. Las áreas temáticas iniciales son fonología, morfología, sintaxis,
léxico, semántica, interfaces (fonología-morfología, sintaxis-morfología,
sintaxis-léxico, etc.), adquisición del lenguaje y filosofía del lenguaje. Las
lenguas oficiales son español, portugués e inglés.
Arancel
El arancel de inscripción al encuentro es de $100 para los expositores y $60
para los asistentes. Los estudiantes de grado quedan exceptuados del pago. Se
otorgarán certificados a los ponentes y a los asistentes.
