Dissertation Abstract:
Using ideas from Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations on 'following a rule', three types of examples were analysed from technical, legal and linguistic data. Sentence groups were selected on the basis of having one sentence with 'for example' in initial position. Analysis focussed on the different lexical and grammatical forms evident in each group of example sequences, usually in a three sentence unit comprising Generalisation/Particularisation/Evaluation. Example forms were shown to be related to and dependent on the particular discourse practices of each example field, as well as the non-linguistic practises of the fields.
