Description:
The City University of Hong Kong invites applications and nominations for the following post. Candidates with applied research achievements will receive very positive consideration. Relevant experience in business and industry will be a definite asset. Head of Department of English [Ref. C/839/09] Following a departmental restructuring, the Department of English will commence operation as a separate Department in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences on 1 July 2008. It will continue to develop a range of existing programmes in the area of English language, including BA (Hons) in English for Professional Communication, BA (Hons) in English for the Professions, MA in English for Specific Purposes, and MA in Teaching of English as a Second Language. In addition, the Department will continue to offer a wide range of English for Specific Purpose courses to students across the University to develop their English communication skills and will embark on a new role to develop courses in English literature as part of a University initiative in General Education. The Department will have a very active research agenda with a focus on applied linguistics. Staff have expertise to supervise research in such areas as corpus linguistics, language and law, second language acquisition, applied genre, critical discourse analysis of academic, professional, institutional and public discourses. Research in the area of English language and literature will be a future focus. The Department will offer research programmes leading to MPhil and PhD in these areas. Qualifications for Appointment The Head of Department will provide strong academic leadership in the development of teaching and research within the Department, as well as providing effective managerial leadership. Candidates should possess strong academic and professional qualifications, substantial relevant experience in tertiary education, and an internationally recognized record of research and scholarship. Salary and Conditions of Service The successful candidate will be offered appointment to an academic rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointment will either be on superannuable terms with provision for superannuation benefits, or on a fixed-term contract with contract-end gratuity. The appointee will be offered the headship appointment concurrently for an initial period of three years. The University offers competitive salaries and employee benefits, including annual leave, medical and dental schemes, housing benefits and, where applicable, passage allowance.
