Dear Subscribers,
I come from a somewhat different perspective asking for your continued support of
The LINGUIST List, being one of the oldest of today's LL crew members and having
come out of academic retirement to join this gang of hard-working, highly motivated
twenty-somethings here in Ypsilanti. And I'm doing my best to catch up with what
seems to come so naturally to them!

I received my Ph.D. in linguistics more decades ago than I care to divulge, when
the field was so young and full of potential and excitement. Who could have foreseen
then what our field has developed into in this century? Certainly not what I witness
on a daily basis, working here at LINGUIST. The sheer range and depth of information,
services, and innovative digital tools that we are developing still amazes me.
Personally I could never have imagined that I'd be in charge of the effort that has
led to our new Institute of Language Information and Technology (ILIT) website.
Check it out at www.linguistlist.org/ilit.

But equal to the substance of what we do here is the quality of those with whom I work.
They are as smart, articulate, enthusiastic, and hard-working a group of students as I
have ever met, and they truly deserve the financial support we are asking of you. LL
graduate assistants have an incredible work ethic, a refreshing "can-do" attitude, and
an eagerness to put themselves to the test, whether it is improving the content and
accessibility of our website, tackling daunting computational tasks required for such
complex research projects as LL-MAP and MultiTree-which you should all check out-or
becoming acquainted with the plight of endangered languages and what can be done about
it. Equally impressive is the atmosphere of openness and egalitarianism that characterize
our teams, due in no small part to the steady guidance of Helen and Anthony, and the
dedicated assistance of our team managers Michael, Gayathri, Maria and Ann.

But it's not all work and no play here: LL crews are well-known for the great sense of
humor and fun they bring to their work, as reflected in this year's Fund Drive themes
and pages-which brings me back to my appeal. Your continued support of our dedicated
LINGUIST crew helps to keep this amazing web infrastructure operating at the usual
high level of efficiency, comprehensiveness, and accessibility that you've come to
expect. Please also remember what your support means to shaping a new generation of
linguists: the broad intellectual training and the hands-on practical experience that
our graduate students receive here contribute in important ways to shaping new directions
for the ever-expanding field of linguistics. So thank you very much for supporting us!

The LINGUIST List

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $60,000. This money will go to help keep
the List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Fund Drive
2008 LINGUIST List Circus and join us on our many shows!

http://linguistlist.org/fund-drive/2008/

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form at
https://linguistlist.org/donation/donate/donate1.cfm

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later. To do so, go to:
https://linguistlist.org/donation/pledge/pledge1.cfm

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations
can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax
payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your
financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
