Re the comment about grammatical vs. sociological gender. They are not
completely unrelated.

Cosgrave and Sheldon would appreciate the notion of indirect indexing of
gender proposed by E. Ochs in an unpublished MS. She lists Japanese
examples which directly index "coarse intensity" and indirectly index male
"voice". Lg-gender relations are seen as "distributional and probabilistic".
Is that Cosgrave's point?
