William Gladstone, Victorianism and Nationalism in Historical and Literary Perspective Short Title: W. G. Bicentenary Date: 20-Nov-2009 - 21-Nov-2009 Location: Sofia, Bulgaria Contact: Roumen Genov Contact Email: genov nbu.bg Linguistic Field(s): Discourse Analysis; Ling & Literature; Sociolinguistics Meeting Description: William Gladstone, Victorianism and Nationalism in Historical and Literary Perspective Conference dedicated to Gladstone Bicentenary William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) was a most extraordinary figure in many respects. A potent symbol of the Victorian era, he was most unconventional and unorthodox Victorian. As national and world leader he left his impact on many sides of the life of the British society, from socio-economic and political system to university curricula, and on countries as distant as Bulgaria and South Africa. At the same time he was a scholar and author, whose vast intellectual interests ranged from the Homeric epic to Tennyson's poetry. The Bulgarian Society for British Studies and the History Department of the New Bulgarian University organize a conference to mark the Gladstone Bicentenary, to be held at NBU, Sofia, on November 20-21, 2009. The panels at the conference will be centered on: Gladstone and Victorianism; European nationalism and self-determination; Language, and politics; The European concert and humanitarian intervention. Proposals of papers with summaries (up to 200 words) should be sent to Assoc. Prof. Roumen Genov at: genov nbu.bg, by July 31, 2009. The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non
Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be
offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers
only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
