Chair in Applied Linguistics for 0.6 fte Free University Amsterdam The Netherlands Vacancy number 1.2009.00203 The Faculty of Arts invites applications for a professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of Language and Communication. The successful candidate will be involved in teaching and research, and will coordinate the work of the section. Candidates should have a broad interest in teaching and research within the field of Applied Linguistics, as well as offering a clear specialization relating to language acquisition and language teaching. Preference may be given to candidates with experience in conducting experimental research. The Applied Linguistics section is active in teaching and research relating to language acquisition, language teaching, and the relation between the two. Staff in the section teach courses to students doing a variety of BA degrees, as well as offering MA specialisms in Dutch as a second language and language learning disabilities. The section also runs a postgraduate diploma in teaching Dutch as a second language. job description -teaching at all levels; -developing new courses and coordinating teaching activities; -supervising work placements and undergraduate and graduate dissertations; -conducting research; -coordinating and directing research projects within the interfaculty research institute AZIRE; -acquiring research projects and supervising PhD students and postdocs; -carrying out management and administrative duties; -promoting interest in the field of applied linguistics; -participating in projects aimed at increasing the social impact of research outcomes. Requirements -PhD in applied linguistics or a related area; -an excellent research record, with an attractive series of international publications and networks; -relevant teaching experience in higher education; -excellent communicative and organizational skills. Appointment details This is a 60% position. There is an initial trial period of two years, after which a tenured position is possible. Non-native speakers of Dutch will be expected to have developed a relevant command of the Dutch language within a period of two years. Salary The maximum gross monthly salary is € 7142,- on the basis of a fulltime position (salary scale H2).
