EAST ASIAN STUDIES PROJECT COORDINATOR (POST-DOCTORAL POSITION)
The University of Notre Dame's Center for Asian Studies (CAS) and Center
for the Study of Languages and Cultures (CSLC) invite applications for a
project coordinator at the post-doctorate level who works in a discipline
emphasizing Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean area studies from a humanities
or educational perspective to fill the 2-year grant-funded position of East
Asian Studies (EAS) project coordinator. We are searching for a project
coordinator with competence in one or more of these cultures and languages,
who also has experience with curricular and pedagogical development.
Candidates may have, for example, a doctorate in Second Language
Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, or Foreign Language Education with
expertise in Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean.
The EAS coordinator's primary responsibility will be to help coordinate key
components of the project "A New Paradigm for Asian Studies at ND:
Innovation, Integration, and Distinction," funded by the Undergraduate
International Studies and Foreign Language (UISFL) program of the US
Department of Education. The coordinator will assist the project
co-directors, faculty steering committee, and participating units during
the project's implementation. A successful candidate would bring
Asia-specific knowledge to new CSLC programming and assessment initiatives
and help establish an integrated curriculum that will endure beyond the
grant period.
The EAS project coordinator will work with CAS and the CSLC, the Department
of East Asian Languages and Cultures, the Provost's Office on Asia
Initiatives, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, and the
College of Arts & Letters, as well as external consultants, to assist in
the development and coordination of an integrated curriculum, co-curricular
programming, and language learning resources. S/he will assist the
College's pedagogy/assessment specialist in developing and implementing
program-level assessment initiatives in Asian languages, work with the
director of the CSLC to ensure that Asian language students are offered
appropriate co-curricular programming, as well as assist in the
identification of Asia-specific materials, including print and electronic
resources, for the CSLC, the University library, and the Kellogg
Institute's outreach program.

Asian Studies is flourishing at Notre Dame, and the Center for Asian
Studies, founded in 1996, is at the center of these developments. The
Center coordinates teaching and research related to Asia and has a core
faculty of 25 and over a dozen other contributing members. CAS teaches
approximately 30 courses related to Asia each semester, with around 600
students.
