Meeting Description:
Writing 2day: The London Symposium on Writing Systems is to be held on November 28, 2009, at the Institute of Education, University of London.
Like its predecessor in 2008, the event will bring together researchers in different fields who are working on the acquisition, linguistic characteristics and processing of scripts, orthographies and writing systems of the world. The aim is for an high level exchange in an informal, friendly environment that is conducive to new ideas and collaborations.
The programme is as follows:
Session 1: Writing Systems Research

Session 2: Psycholinguistic Studies of Word Recognition across Writing Systems

-Brendan Weekes, Sussex.
-Miho Sasaki, Keio University, Japan. Effects of Writing Systems on Word Recognition by L2 Users: a Cross-linguistic Study.
Session 3: Technology and Writing Systems
- Naomi Baron, American University, Washington, USA. Talk about Texting: Attitudes towards Mobile Phones
- Roger Mitton, Birkbeck, London. The Three Ages of Spellchecking.
Session 4: Literacy across Writing Systems
- Cristina Burani, Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies, National Research Council (ISTC-CNR), Rome, Italy. Morpheme-based Reading in Young Skilled and Dyslexic Italian Readers.
- Sonali Nag, York. Beyond Alphabetic Processes: Literacy in the Alphasyllabaries
Poster Session:
