The workshop 'Verbal Periphrases in Catalan and other Romance Languages: New Data, New Approaches, New Perspectives' is a special session within the 22nd International Congress for Catalan Studies, University of Vienna / Austria, September 23-25, 2010.

Workshop Description:
At the 18th German Conference on Catalan Studies in Munich (October 2001),
around 25 linguists from Europe and overseas gathered to celebrate a panel on
'Verbal periphrases in Catalan and other Romance languages in the light of
current grammatical theories'. Because the extremely rich inventory of
periphrastic constructions has always been of special relevance for
Ibero-Romance linguistics, the subject of verbal periphrases has experienced
increased attraction and scientific interest since 2001.
Over the last several years, the aim of exhaustively describing the periphrastic
inventories of individual Romance languages has been partly achieved, e.g.
through the 'Diccionario de perífrasis verbales' (Madrid: Gredos, 2006),
coordinated by Luís García Fernández, for the Spanish language. With the rise of
Construction Grammar, a theoretical paradigm has established itself as a
descriptive and analytic model that integrates formal and functional approaches
to the analysis of complex morpho-syntactic units and can be applied in many
promising ways to the study of verb-based periphrastic constructions.
Two perspectives that played an important role in more than one of the
contributions to the 2001 panel concern the historical development of verbal
periphrases. On the one hand, the diachronic development of periphrases, in
particular either the early period of transition from Latin to Proto- and Early
Romance or on later periods of Romance diachrony, as well as the concomitant
changes within the paradigms have both played important roles. On the other
hand, however, the dynamics witnessed today within the inventories of
periphrastic forms that are subject to change through language contact or
through diaphasically motivated or genre-driven creative discursive processes
also play an important role. In comparison with some years ago, research
questions like these can be addressed in a much easier way today thanks to
better access to data, documents and corpora.
Some new or expanded diachronic corpora deserve particular mention in this
respect, e.g. the Catalan 'Corpus Informatitzat del Català Antic' (CICA)
coordinated by Joan Torruella, Josep Martines and Manuel Pérez Saldanya, and the
diachronic mega-corpora of Spanish and Portuguese designed by Mark Davies. These
new resources allow fast and convenient access to new data, but with the new
data, new questions also arise.
The Vienna workshop, which is organized as a follow-up activity to the 2001
panel in cooperation with the Department of Romance Philology of Vienna
University and with the German Association for Catalan Studies / Deutscher
Katalanistenverband e.V., will be dedicated to the discussion of these recent
data and new research questions.

Organization:
This workshop is held as a Special section within the 22nd International
Conference on Catalan Studies at Vienna University / Austria. In order to
participate at the workshop, a registration for this conference will be required.
Information on the registration process as well as on travel, accommodation and
the social program are available, in German and Catalan, on the conference
web-site at http://katalanistentag10.univie.ac.at. However, participants of the
workshop whose papers have been accepted will receive specific information in
Catalan and English directly from the workshop organizers.
The registration fee is 60 EUR (until June 30th, 2010; 70 EUR after that date;
40 / 50 EUR for students and unemployed scholars). The International Conference
on Catalan Studies begins in September 23, 2010, 17:00h, and ends on September
25, 2010, in the evening; the workshop sessions will take place on Friday,
September 24, and Saturday, September 25, 2010.
