Dear all, I am excited to let you know that the Corpus Linguistics team at the University of Michigan English Language Institute has just launched MICUSP Simple - a free search and browse interface to the new Michigan Corpus of Upper-level Student Papers (http://micusp.elicorpora.info/). MICUSP consists of 829 A-graded papers from 16 different disciplines written by students at senior undergraduate or graduate level. The URL for MICUSP Simple is http://search-micusp.elicorpora.info/simple/. The website is optimized for use in Firefox (most features also work fine in Internet Explorer and Safari but we are still working on some issues with these and other browsers). MICUSP Simple was designed with teachers, students, and novice corpus users in mind. In addition to a simple search facility, the interface provides multiple filtering options to enable easy access to a wide range of sample writing assignments from a major American research university. It features interactive graphs, user-friendly navigation, automatic results update in response to user selection, and full paper view (in HTML and original pdf format). MICUSP and MICUSP Simple are very much a team effort and I would like to acknowledge the support of a number of people who are or were involved in the project at various stages: - John Swales (project conception and advising); - Rita Simpson-Vlach (project management 2004 to 2006); - Annelie Ädel (project management 2006 to 2007); - Matthew Brook O’Donnell and Gregory Garretson (programming and XML schema design); - Annelie Ädel, Ute Römer, Stefanie Wulff (submission solicitation); - Jesse Sielaff (coordination of electronic paper submission); - Yung-Hui Chien, Geoffrey Ho, Lucas Jarmin, Emily Lin, Matthew Brook O'Donnell, Jesse Sielaff, Madison Stuart, Beilei Zhang (XML coding); - Geoffrey Ho, Lucas Jarmin, Miranda Kozman, Emily Lin, Kelly Lockman, Nasy Pfanner, Ute Römer, Madison Stuart, Beilei Zhang (paper classification); - Derek Blancey, Kate Boyd, Lucas Jarmin, Kelly Lockman, Matthew Brook O'Donnell, Ute Römer, Jesse Sielaff, Madison Stuart, Edwin Teng, Beilei Zhang (search interface design and implementation); - Instructors and testing specialists at the University of Michigan English Language Institute and members of the University of Michigan Corpus Analysis Group (feedback on paper classification system and search/browse interface design). If you have comments or questions on MICUSP Simple, please email us at micusp-help umich.edu. And now: Happy searching and browsing!! - Ute and the MICUSP Team Dr. Ute Römer Director of the Applied Corpus Linguistics Unit English Language Institute University of Michigan 500 E.
