Paulette Hopple, SIL linguist in mainland southeast Asia, died unexpectedly at the age of 60 at the end of a workshop in Kunming. She was cremated and her ashes interred in the Chiangmai (Thailand) Foreign Cemetery. Paulette received her PhD in linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington. In the early 1980s she also studied at the University of Rangoon. She will be remembered for her characteristic vigor and intellectual curiosity as she pursued research on the many small language groups of the Thailand-Myanmar-China region. She was an ardent advocate for training and language development among the Palaungic people groups. In the late 1980s, she was instrumental in the establishment and development of the graduate linguistics program at Payap University in Chiangmai, Thailand.
