The Institute of English at the University of Silesia is pleased to announce the
21st International Conference on Foreign and Second Language Acquisition.
Traditionally, this conference focuses on research in second and foreign
language learning, concentrating each year on different aspects of the research
field. The leading theme of the following year's conference is Individual
Learner Differences in Second Language Acquisition.
Call for Papers
The significance of individual differences in language learning has been
recognized as an important area of research for quite some time now. However,
with new developments in research methods and tools, a lot of interesting
studies have appeared which are shedding new light on the field. Proposals for
papers reporting on research over a wide spectrum of cognitive, affective and
personality variables are welcome for presentation at the conference. We will
also accept selected proposals in other areas of SLA research in addition to the
leading theme. All those wishing to contribute papers or just to attend
presentations are welcome to participate in the conference.
The event will be held in Szczyrk, a resort town in the Beskid Mountains of
Southern Poland, from 28th to 30th May 2009 (arrival on Wednesday, 27th May).
The conference venue will be Hotel Zacisze, where our conference has found a new
home last year. Most of the conference participants will be accommodated there,
but in the situation of all the available rooms being booked, places will be
secured in other hotels close to the conference venue.

Paper abstracts should be sent before 31 January 2009 to szczyrkconferenceop.pl .
The registration form, including the paper abstract, should be sent as an
attachment to an e-mail. Additionally, to facilitate the procedure of building
the conference database, all participants are kindly asked to type their entry
details into an Excel document posted with the conference announcement
(Baza2009.xls) and send it back as a separate attachment, changing its name to
SurnameName.xls (in Excel 2003 format).

Les communications seront d'une durée de 20 minutes, suivies d'une période de 10
minutes pour les questions.
Thèmes
L'invention du Web version 2.0 et l'explosion des médias de communication
facilitent plus que jamais l'accès à l'information et la démocratisation de ce
dernier. Cependant, cette véritable révolution apporte son lot de problèmes dans
des domaines comme celui du repérage de l'information et du forage de données
(data mining), pour ne citer que ces derniers.
Dans ce contexte, deux stratégies de recherche semblent les plus aptes à relever
ces nouveaux défis : le multilinguisme et la pluridisciplinarité.
Le multilinguisme s'impose du fait que toutes les langues participent désormais
au Web dans un sens large et non seulement l'anglais comme c'était le cas au
début de cette révolution informationnelle. Il s'impose également pour des
raisons d'économie d'effort et de robustesse. Ainsi, les applications
développées en prenant en compte un plus grand nombre de langues à la fois
s'avèrent plus puissantes que celles qui n'ont à l'esprit qu'une seule langue.
De plus, toute recherche portant sur les phénomènes langagiers ne peut se passer
d'une étude comparative, une méthode léguée par la linguistique comparative du
IXXe siècle et fortement privilégiée par les courants linguistiques
contemporains dans une perspective de grammaire universelle.
La pluridisciplinarité s'impose du fait que le domaine d'étude nécessite la
maîtrise d'outils, de méthodes et de notions provenant de plusieurs disciplines
scientifiques. Parmi ces dernières, citons la linguistique (théorique et
appliquée), les sciences cognitives, l'intelligence artificielle et
l'informatique sans oublier la logique, la psychologie et la philosophie.
Les conférences peuvent porter sur tous les thèmes du traitement automatique des
langues et concerner une langue ou plus. Les thèmes pouvant être traités
s'inscrivent dans les domaines suivants, mais ne s'y limitent pas :

- Phonétique et phonologie
- Morphologie
- Syntaxe
- Sémantique
- Lexique
etc.
Applications
- Enseignement assisté par ordinateur
- Extraction de l'information sur le Web
- Traduction automatique
- Analyse et génération de textes
- Résumé automatique
- Dialogue personne-machine
