My name is Evelyn Richter. I have been a student editor at The 
LINGUIST List since January 2008. In the past two years, I have 
grown professionally and personally in ways that I never imagined 
possible. This is why I would like to seize this opportunity to 
thank all of you for supporting The LINGUIST List. I owe this 
wonderful opportunity to you because The LINGUIST List could not

Since my professional goal is to become a computational linguist, 
I think the improvement of my programming skills comes to mind first 
when I reflect on my learning and development during the past two 
years. Equipped with some basics in Perl, PHP and SQL, I was 'thrown 
into cold water' - as we would say in German ('ins kalte Wasser 
geworfen werden') - by helping to redesign The LINGUIST List Cookbook 
straight away. This meant learning Cold Fusion, CSS and Javascript 
mostly on my own and in a very short period of time. Of course, The 
LINGUIST List Cookbook (http://linguistlist.org/cookbook) may not be 
the linguistic service that you would generally expect from The 
LINGUIST List, but working on it helped me learn valuable skills 
that I would later need as The LINGUIST List Intranet team leader. 
 
In the latter capacity, I had to ensure that your submissions would 
be processed correctly on our back-end from the time you submit them 
to the time they were to be sent out as issues. I was able to draw 
from the programming skills I learned during my first weeks at LINGUIST 
List to fulfill this important task. Every now and then I even had the 
chance to process large amounts of data automatically and thereby 
saving my colleagues a lot of manual labor and improving my programming 
skills at the same time. 

I am immensely grateful for all the things I 
have learned in the last two years as a LINGUIST List editor and I hope 
that many future LINGUIST student editors will receive the same 
opportunity to learn and grow at an organization whose goal it is to 
provide high quality service to all of you. Please consider donating to
