Dear Subscribers:

We are all absolutely delighted to be able to say that the 
2010 LINGUIST Fund Drive is now over, and successfully. We 
managed, at the last minute, to collect the $65,000 which 
was our goal.

No one likes Fund Drives. They disrupt the peaceful running 
of things, they are a tremendous amount of work for all of 
us, and -- worst of all -- I am sure that they make it harder 
for you to find what you need on our site.

Nevertheless, we have very little choice. Here in the USA 
there is no government help for organizations such as ours. 
If we don't find the money ourselves, we'd have to shut up 
shop. And we'd hate to see the wonderful students we have 
leave, for we're really like a family here. We're so very 
happy that, once again, you all have come through for us. 
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The one good thing about Fund Drives is that we get to have 
much more interaction with you all. We are always pleased to 
do that, and to see what kind, generous people there are out 
there. Linguistics is a pretty special thing, I think. Perhaps 
it's because we aren't a very large discipline ... but I'm 
always amazed at how many people come from nowhere during Fund 
Drive, offering to help us in whatever way we can ... People 
who write letters, people who organize their schools to collect 
donations, and of course, the many donors themselves. We 
appreciate you all so much.

But now we can put this all to bed for another year. Thank you 
so much for the money you contributed. Every penny will be well 
spent, I promise you. I am so proud to call myself a linguist, 
for that means I am part of a very special group of people, the 
subscribers who helped us make this Fund Drive successful.
